Cummins becomes Australia’s 27th ODI captain and the first fast bowler to hold the position after impressing in his first year as Test captain.

Test Commander Pat Cummins was Tuesday appointed Australia’s one- day captain after Aaron Finch retired from the 50- over format, with the fast bowler saying he’d” significant shoes to fill”. The 29- time-old Cummins will lead the side through to the ODI World Cup in India coming time.” I’ve completely enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous quantum from his leadership,” Cummins said of his long- time teammate.

” They’re significant shoes to fill, although we’re extremely fortunate to have a one- day team with a huge quantum of experience.”

Nature Finch retired from ODIs last month after a poor run of form, but remains commander of the Twenty20 side which opens its defence of the World Cup against New Zealand in Sydney on Saturday.

Alex Carey, Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh were all seen as in the running for the job.

Calls had also been mounting for David Warner to be considered despite his continuance leadership ban stemming from a ball- tampering affair in South Africa in 2018.

” We’re veritably fortunate to have a number of high- quality leaders and elderly players across all formats,” said Cricket Australia’s public brigades principal Ben Oliver.

” The board and pickers agree Pat is the ideal choice to lead the ODI platoon through the coming period including the 2023 World Cup.”

Cummins took over the Test job last time after Tim Paine stood down on the dusk of the Ashes against England following a sexting reproach and he has been extensively credited for his calm leadership.

” Internally, it’s a no- brainer decision, Pat is the person we want leading the platoon,” Bailey told a news conference in Brisbane.

” The crusade focus is veritably much on the 2023 World Cup, I suppose we have got 14 games before that and we suppose Pat’s the perfect person to lead this group to that event.”

Finch, who’ll lead Australia at the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup on home soil, retired from ODI justice last month after a poor run of form with the club.

” It’s a great honour,” Cummins said.” I want to intimately thank Aaron for all his sweats over the last many times, he is been a fantastic leader of our team and the platoon’s in a great place. Really agitated for the coming 12 months.”

Warner was banned for life from leadership positions for his part in a 2018 Newlands ball- tampering reproach and could be considered for avice-captaincy part if the discipline is changed after a review.

Cummins said on Sunday he was doubtful to feature in every ODI because of the number of matches Australia play in all formats, and that someone like Warner could step in when he was absent.

” I do not anticipate Pat to play every one- day game in the lead- up to the World Cup,” Bailey added.

” I anticipate that we might see two or three guys taking the leadership for a game at some stage.”

Bailey refused to presume on whether Warner could be one of those players pending the review of his ban, but did say he completely championed the process.

” I hope it happens in a timely manner, I suppose the longer it drags out just leads to enterprise and I do not suppose that is helpful for David,” he added. Read More T20 World Cup News….
